Anthropic’s Mythos model was announced on April 7 as the company’s most capable AI ever, with powerful cybersecurity capabilities so significant that it is not being released to the public. Just one week later, the situation has become considerably more complex: Anthropic is simultaneously briefing the Trump administration about Mythos while suing the Pentagon, encouraging major banks to test the model, and navigating a geopolitical landscape where US-China AI competition is intensifying.

What Is Mythos and Why Is It Restricted
Anthropic describes Mythos as its “most capable model yet for coding and agentic tasks,” referring to its ability to act autonomously rather than simply responding to prompts. The model can reportedly detect critical software vulnerabilities, including zero-day exploits, at a level that surpasses human security researchers.
That capability is precisely why Anthropic is not releasing Mythos to the public. A model that can find security vulnerabilities can also, in theory, be used to exploit them. The Washington Post published an opinion piece on April 12 calling the Pentagon’s ban on Anthropic “shortsighted,” arguing that the military is barring itself from using the most powerful cybersecurity tool available precisely when adversarial nations are investing heavily in offensive AI capabilities.
The Pentagon Lawsuit: A Complicated Relationship
In March 2026, Anthropic filed a lawsuit against Trump’s Department of Defense after the agency labeled the company a supply-chain risk. The conflict arose from negotiations over how Anthropic’s AI systems could be used by the military. Anthropic sought to limit use cases that included mass surveillance of Americans and fully autonomous weapons.
The Pentagon ultimately awarded the contract to OpenAI instead, which agreed to fewer restrictions on military applications. The supply-chain risk designation effectively cut Anthropic off from government contracts while the legal battle continues.
Yet despite this adversarial legal posture, Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark confirmed at the Semafor World Economy Summit that the company has been actively briefing the Trump administration about Mythos. Clark described the Pentagon dispute as a “narrow contracting dispute” and emphasized that Anthropic does not want it to interfere with national security cooperation.
“Our position is the government has to know about this stuff, and we have to find new ways for the government to partner with a private sector that is making things that are truly revolutionizing the economy,” Clark said. “So absolutely, we talked to them about Mythos, and we’ll talk to them about the next models as well.”
Major Banks Are Testing Mythos
While the Pentagon is barred from using Anthropic’s technology, major financial institutions are being encouraged to do exactly that. Reports from Bloomberg and confirmed by TechCrunch indicate that Trump officials have been urging Wall Street banks to test Mythos for cybersecurity applications.
The banks reportedly evaluating Mythos include JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Bank of America, and Morgan Stanley. The use case is clear: financial institutions are constant targets for cyberattacks, and an AI model capable of detecting zero-day vulnerabilities could significantly strengthen their security posture.
The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority is reportedly also discussing the implications of Mythos, signaling that regulatory interest extends beyond US borders.
The Paradox: Too Dangerous for the Public, Essential for National Security
The Mythos situation reveals a fundamental tension in AI development. Anthropic has determined that Mythos is too powerful to release publicly because of its cybersecurity capabilities, yet it is simultaneously arguing that the government must have access to these same capabilities for national security purposes.
This creates an awkward hierarchy of trust: Anthropic trusts major banks and foreign governments (through regulatory briefings) more than it trusts individual developers or the general public. Clark, who leads a team of economists at Anthropic, said the company is currently seeing “some potential weakness in early graduate employment” across select industries rather than the widespread job displacement that Amodei’s warnings might suggest. The discrepancy reflects a difference in timelines: Amodei believes AI will become dramatically more powerful than most people expect in the near future.
When asked what college students should study given AI’s trajectory, Clark suggested that the most valuable skills involve “synthesis across a whole variety of subjects and analytical thinking.” The reasoning is that AI provides access to expertise across many domains, but the critical skill is knowing the right questions to ask and recognizing when insights from different disciplines can be combined productively.
What This Means for Enterprises
The Mythos situation has practical implications for any organization evaluating AI security tools. First, the most powerful AI models are increasingly being developed with restricted access rather than open availability.
